Don’t Miss Albuquerque’s Salsa Fiesta in Old Town

If you’re traveling to New Mexico in September, you’ll want to plan your trip around one of the Southwest’s most fun festivals—the Salsa Fiesta. This year’s Fiesta is the tenth anniversary of the festival, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. This year’s event is on September 13, 2014 from noon to 8 p.m.—learn more about what’s in store for you during your visit to the Salsa Fiesta!

Dancing and Music

The Salsa Fiesta is about both the food and the dance/music, but let’s learn about what’s featured regarding the latter.  At this year’s Fiesta, headliner Charanga del Valle Salsa Band will be bringing their talent to the stage and show off traditional salsa, bolero, cha-cha and merengue music. The band is directed by Rodolfo Gonzalez and features vocalist Annette Aragon as well as violins, a flute, and a three-piece horn section. They’ll be performing for two hours in the evening at the Fiesta—don’t miss it!

Salsa Competition

The main event, however, is the salsa competition. Preparation of the salsa takes place at the beginning of the day, and later in the afternoon, voters taste and vote on who made the best salsa. The contest features non-professional cooks in the region, with first prize winners receiving $1,000, second prize winners receiving $500, and third place winners receiving $250. With great prizes like that, you might worry that admission would be expensive, but that’s not the case—participation in tasting and voting on the salsas is just $5 per person.

In addition to salsa dancing, salsa music and salsa the food being featured at the Fiesta, kids’ activities including face painting and a climbing wall will be available as will food trucks featuring great flavors from around Albuquerque and. New Mexico
